History
Hunley Golf Club is set in a beautiful location along the North East coast of England, just a short drive from the seaside towns of Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Whitby. The peaceful, scenic surroundings provide a perfect setting for enjoying a round of golf while soaking in breathtaking views of the coastline.
Founded in 1994, our course was thoughtfully designed to blend with the natural landscape, offering a challenge and enjoyment for golfers of all levels. With 27 holes and three different course layouts — Morgans, Imperial, and Jubilee — there’s always something new to explore. We’re committed to providing a top-quality experience, continually investing in our facilities to keep Hunley a sought-after destination for golf lovers.

Booking Tee Times
Once you join, you’ll receive an email with your login details for the Intelligent Golf System, which is the easiest way to book tee times, sign up for competitions, and check upcoming events. You can book your tee times up to 21 days in advance, and competition entries can be made up to 8 days ahead (unless otherwise specified). If you prefer, our helpful staff in the Golf Shop can assist you with booking and registrations.
The club operates two separate tee sheets: one for the 18-hole course and one for the 9-hole course. Tee intervals are set at 10 minutes, which helps keep the pace of play flowing smoothly. The course of the day will be clearly displayed at the top of each sheet, so you’ll always know where you’re playing.
For added convenience, we recommend downloading the IgMember App from the App Store (Apple) or Play Store (Android). For just £2.99 per year, you’ll be able to manage your bookings whenever it suits you, making it easier than ever to stay on top of your schedule.
Guests
As a member, you’re welcome to invite up to three guests per day to enjoy the course at a special reduced rate. Each guest should check in at the Golf Shop, and they can enjoy this discounted rate up to six times per calendar year. It’s a great way to share your love for golf with friends and family!
Lockers
We have lockers available for rent in both the ladies’ and gentlemen’s changing rooms for £35 per year. While we currently don’t have space for golf trolleys, we do our best to accommodate everyone. If you’d like to rent a locker, just let a staff member in the Golf Shop know, and we’ll be happy to help. If there are no lockers available, we’ll add your name to the waiting list.
Buggies
For those who prefer a buggy, we have them available to hire at discounted rates. We recommend booking in advance to ensure availability. To keep the course in excellent condition and ensure everyone’s safety, we ask that all buggy users follow the provided safety guidelines.
Etiquette
The R&A rules of golf provide a helpful guide to the etiquette and standards that are valued by golfers around the world, and you can read them here: www.randa.org/rules/rules-hub.
At Hunley Golf Club, we believe in creating a warm, friendly atmosphere for all of our members and visitors. We encourage everyone to follow these guidelines to help us maintain the welcoming environment that makes Hunley extra special. By doing so, we can all enjoy our time here and make it a memorable experience for everyone, whether on the course or in the clubhouse.
On the Course:
We recommend that all players wear appropriate golfing attire to help maintain traditional standards while keeping the respectful atmosphere of the course:
- Trousers: Look to avoid tracksuits, jogging bottoms, combat trousers, and jeans.
- Shirts: Most shirts are welcomed, but we kindly ask that football shirts and vests be left at home.
- Shoes: Golf shoes are needed for the course (no trainers, please).
- Shorts: Smart, fitted shorts are perfectly fine and welcome!
- Clubhouse Shoes: You’re welcome to wear spikeless golf shoes in the clubhouse, just be sure to remove any grass or debris beforehand.
In the Clubhouse & Driving Range:
We encourage a relaxed yet smart standard of dress when in the clubhouse or using the driving range:
- Jeans are perfectly acceptable in both areas.
- We just ask that everyone keeps a neat and comfortable appearance.
- Our staff may kindly suggest a change if attire is not in keeping with the club’s atmosphere.
Our goal is to ensure everyone has a great experience, so we don’t enforce any of the above. However, if used as a guide we hope these recommendations help you to get the most from your membership and enjoy sharing the facilities with others.
Mobile Phones
While enjoying your round of golf, we encourage you to be mindful of your mobile phone. By keeping it on silent or vibrate, you can help maintain a peaceful atmosphere and ensure that others are not distracted during their play.
Spirit of the Game
Golf is unique in that it’s often played without the direct oversight of a referee. As such, it relies on each player’s integrity and respect for one another. We invite all players to embrace the true spirit of the game by conducting themselves with courtesy, discipline, and sportsmanship. Whether you’re playing for fun or in a competitive setting, fostering an environment of respect and fairness enhances everyone’s experience
Pace of Play
Everyone has differing views on what constitutes acceptable pace of play, but they all agree that slow play can detract from the enjoyment of the game. There is a responsibility on all players to ensure that golf is played at a good pace, and a pace appropriate to the course being played. Factors that may influence what is considered an appropriate pace may be the difficulty of the course, the weather and the range and ability of the players on the course. The guidelines below if adhered to will help ensure a reasonable pace of play:
On the Course:
- All players must maintain their place in the field, which is immediately behind the group in front and not ahead of the group behind. This is a group responsibility and not an individual one. All members should be proactive in addressing the slow play problem.
- Should your group fall a clear hole behind and you are delaying the group behind please invite that group to play through (irrespective of the number of players in that group).
- If you hit a ball that you think may be hard to find, or it may be out of bounds, please hit a provisional ball to save having to walk back if the first ball can’t be found.
- No more than three minutes is allowed to search for a ball. Be ready to call through the group behind if you can’t find your ball within two minutes and proceed by enforcing the golf rules governing the conditions under which your ball was lost. If more than one ball needs to be found, split up and search for all the balls at the same time.
- Go to your ball and get ready to hit your next shot as soon as it is feasible, i.e., not impeding another player’s shot or endangering yourself. Don’t always wait for your playing partner to play before going to your ball.
- Allow the shorter hitters in your group to tee off first.
- Walk briskly between shots.
- Leave your golf bag, buggy or cart to the side of the green nearest to the next tee.
- Cart users should be particularly aware of the extra time taken in sharing a cart and look for ways to speed up play, for example, move ahead of walkers to look for lost balls, try to position the cart for easy access to the next tee, etc.
On the Green:
- When you reach the green, move to your ball and repair any pitch marks. Where possible, line up your putt prior to your turn to putt.
- If your ball needs to be marked, do it as quickly as you can and anticipate the requirements of your fellow players.
- Except in match play, and where you will stand on someone else’s line of putt, when you start putting, continue until you have holed out. If playing stableford competition and you can no longer score on that hole, pick up your ball and let others continue.
- The first player to finish putting should take control of the flag and be ready to replace it in the hole when the final player has completed the hole.
- Players should proceed to the next tee without delay. The following group should be waiting to play their approach shots, so the path taken to the next tee should be in mind. Think ahead; leave your clubs in a place where you won’t be hindering the following players.
- Cards should be marked as quickly as possible after completing the hole, but it is best to mark the cards at the next tee. Please mark your card when it is not your turn to play and remember, at all times your place in the field is immediately behind the group in front and not in front of the group behind.
Ready Golf
With more members and guests eager to play, it’s helpful for everyone to maintain a steady pace of play. One way to do this is by adopting Ready Golf on both the course and the putting green. This simply means players can take their shots when they’re ready, rather than strictly following the rule that the farthest player plays first—except, of course, in match play.
Here are a few examples of Ready Golf:
- Taking your shot while someone in your group is assessing a tricky lie.
- Letting shorter hitters play first if longer hitters need to wait.
- Hitting your shot before assisting a fellow player with a search for a lost ball.
- Putting out if you’re not in someone else’s line of putt.
By considering these practices, we can all help keep the game moving smoothly and ensure everyone enjoys their time on the course.
Course Care
We take a lot of pride in keeping our greens in top shape all year, and you can help us by repairing your pitch marks. It’s a simple task that makes a big difference, so please remember to fix your own marks—and if you spot any others while you’re out there, why not take a moment to fix them too?
If you play from a bunker, make sure to leave it in good condition for anyone else playing behind you. Rakes are provided and a quick smooth over only takes a few seconds.
Divots are another one to keep in mind. If you make one, just replace it in the original spot to help keep the course looking great. The only exception is the tee box—our greenkeepers will take care of those. Thanks for doing your part to keep everything in fantastic condition!
Handicaps
If you don’t have a handicap yet, all you need to do is play 54 holes—mixing up 9-hole and 18-hole rounds—and have a fellow member with an active handicap sign your scorecards. Once you’ve done that, just drop them off at the Golf Shop, and we’ll get your official handicap set up.
Once you’ve got your handicap, we’ll give you a CDH (Central Database of Handicaps) number from England Golf that’s yours to keep throughout your amateur career. From there, we’ll keep track of your handicap, or if you prefer, we can let another club manage it for you.
Want to improve your handicap? Easy—just submit your General Play scores each time you play. You can do this by logging into the computer in the hallway, the IgMember App, or My EG App. Remember to register before your round starts, and make sure your score gets submitted ASAP.
Competing in club events will also help lower your handicap, and the more you play, the more chances you have to improve. If you play in six qualifying individual competitions within the last year, you’ll be eligible to win! And if you’ve transferred from another club, any qualifying competitions there can count too.
