This weekend held the Solheim Cup in Des Moines, Iowa, at which the Americans set out to retain the trophy!
Friday set up a good start for the Europeans giving them a small 2 ½ – 1 ½ lead in the foursomes with 3 out of the 4 matches going to the final hole.
This was a short lead with the americans winning all of the next 4 matches to finish the day 5 ½ – 2 ½. Saturday the Americans won 5 out of the 8 matches, which lead the Europeans some work to do.
Leading into the singles on sunday with a 10 ½ – 5 ½ lead the americans only needed 3 points to retain the trophy. The match of the day and what everyone was talking about including Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia was held by Lexi Thompson and Anna Nordqvist. After being 4 down through 9, Thompson eagled 11 and 15 and birdied 16 to take a one up lead into the last. However Nordqvist hit an amazing shot into 18 to take a half in the match, which was a fair result for them both!
Unfortunately the Americans still had the momentum with the matches taking a 6-6 draw on sunday. The competition finished with Emily Kristine Pedersen losing 3&1 to Danielle Kang but the European team showed their team spirit by walking arm in arm down the 16th fairway with the Dane.
Sorenstram confirmed afterwards she would not return as Europe’s captain for the 2019 tournament at Gleneagles.
Anyway well done to the Europeans, a great show of golf and the positive attitude to come with it! Bring on 2019 at Gleneagles, who wants to go? I sure do!
Just wanted to say a well done to the Hunley lot over the weekend, 2 holes in one and a 4 man playoff! What a weekend!
