In the News this Week…
This weekend was full of the young guns holding their nerves to perform high and secure the win! Starting off with the European tour holding a tournament in one of my favourite golfing destinations of Portugal! The Open De Portugal was held at Morgado Golf resort this weekend. Matt Wallace described it as “a dream come true” after he held his nerve to complete a sensational wire to wire victory.
Having held a five shot lead at the halfway stage & gone into the final round three clear, Wallace saw his advantage reduced to a single stroke by first German Sebastian Heisele and then American Julian Suri, but the 27 year old Englishman found birdies at key times.
The PGA held the Players Tournament this weekend at the Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, with a record of Si Woo Kim being the youngest ever winner at the age of 21! The youngest active member on the PGA missed 11 greens, scrambling every time! He took the Win with a score of -10, with Poulter and Oosthuizen behind on -7. Kim has just filled his bag with the newest woods, irons and balls out, which leads onto some pretty big news from this week!…
The Biggest news of the week has to be the signing of Rory Mcilroy for Taylormade! The day after the big signing, Adidas sold Taylormade, Adams Golf and Ashworth for $425 to US private equity firm KPS Capital Partners. After Nike stopped the production of golf equipment, Mcilroy did not take the decision lightly of changing all the clubs in his bag, spending months thoroughly testing all major known brands. Still wearing Nike clothing and shoes, but now playing with all Taylormade clubs, Mcilroy is earning over $300 million before even posting a score! His putter however, still remains an Odyssey! (May be worth keeping in mind when looking at putters in the shop!)
