Golf News around the world
Dustin Johnson and Ted Potter Junior were co-leaders after day 3 of the AT &T at Pebble Beach this week. They were tied at the top after a superb 62 saw him very close to threatening the illustrious ‘59 club’. However, needing one more birdie in his final 4 holes to join the club, Potter went on to bogey his final 2 holes in a mini collapse. Potter had 9 birdies and 1 eagle to get himself into a very good position. Potter is 246th in the world rankings and he has never previously shot a competitive round of below 64, unsurprising that he dropped a few shots on the last few holes. Dustin Johnson has been very consistent and has hit 3 very steady rounds, with minimal fuss. Dustin was without doubt the favourite to claim victory on Sunday night with loads more experience and plenty more fire power behind him.
However, Potter Junior held on to secure his first win on tour against a very big field. Could he be one for the Ryder Cup this year?
There was not a similar story for Rory McIlroy who suffered an early exit when he struggled in all three rounds and ended up missing the cut. Rory made the vital mistake of publicly saying his putting (which has been the weakest part of his game for many years) was much better after the bulk of his practice was spent with the flat stick.
Predictably it was terrible this week and he had 39 putts on the 2nd day as he slumped to an over par round. With his dad watching on Rory also made a 5 putt, yes 5 putt on the 10th green after nearly reaching the green in 1.
